Since current thrombosis drugs are hampered by serious side effects such as bleeding, drugs that target novel mechanisms of action are of great interest. Zygogen has developed in vivo thrombosis assays using a Z-TagSM fish with fluorescent thrombocytes, the equivalent of mammalian platelets. Application of thrombotic agonists, such as ADP, thrombin and collagen type 1, cause platelet aggregation in vivo, which is easily visualized using platelet-specific fluorescent larvae. Clinical anti-thrombotic drugs, such as aspirin, ticlopidine, ReoPro®, Aggrastat® and Integrilin®, are effective in preventing ADP-induced platelet aggregation, suggesting the conservation of zebrafish and human thrombosis events.
